The 1098 more shares design elements with the older 998 as compared to its predecessor 999, such as horizontally placed lamps and non-integrated exhaust system. Another legacy is the transition from 916/998 single-sided swingarm. This goes back to more traditional Ducati design has been welcomed by many Ducati fans who criticized the design of the 999. Ducati 1098 S

With the release of 1098, Ducati motorcycles create is not only for road riders, but also in the racing world, especially the World Superbike Championship. In an effort to level the playing field, WSBK regulations provide concessions for motor depending on the number of cylinders in their engine design. The fewer cylinders, more concessions, and with two-cylinder Ducati V-twin design capable of utilizing many of the concessions.

Ducati argues that while the engine is at the end of design life (which gave up as much as 20 hp to competition in 2007, his last year in WSBK) and that would be too expensive to maintain a competitive 999. WSBK in 2007 limited to the rules V-twin engine to 1000 cc, so that the Ducati does not effectively have the assurance that the 1098 are eligible for entry in the premier class. Before removing the 1098, Ducati lobbied to renew FIM WSBK rules to accommodate the new bike, threatened to withdraw from WSBK competition if the rules have not changed. Other manufacturers are not happy about racing bikes with larger engines, especially when the bike's Ducati, which has historically dominated the competition WSBK, and Suzuki even threatened to withdraw if the rules were changed. Ducati won when, in June 2007, the FIM announced that the engine capacity limit will be increased to 1200 cc to 2008. However, this increase in displacement is not given without a concession on the part of the Ducati. With a maximum displacement of 1200 cc two-cylinder new for granted, an additional engine modifications are allowed two-cylinder engine gave up. Rules engine modifications for two-cylinder engine and four-cylinder that now parallel. Rules for the three-cylinder engine remains as before.

Ducati won the 2008 Superbike World Championship with R 1098, along with the 2008 British Superbike Championship. Ducati has won 13 World Championships since the World Superbike Championship was established in 1988, and secured the title of producer for the time 15.
